Now that a lot of the release date delays are (hopefully) all behind us here are some projects that I am extra excited about watching in 2022.
Let’s start with TV!
TELEIVISION:
1. Daisy Jones & The Six
We have been waiting for this one for a while. While it had started production back in March of 2020, it seems like it is one of the last projects to pick back up again. The crew reunited back in the Fall of 2021 to continue shooting and rumor has it they are just about wrapped – hoping this one is a for sure in 2022 hitting Amazon Prime Video. The Limited Series is based on the book of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid and follows the lives of band members of “The Six” and their controversial, fearless leader Daisy Jones.
Streaming: Amazon Prime Video
Starring: Sam Claflin, Riley Keough, Camila Morrone, Suki Waterhouse & more!
2. Game of Thrones: House of Dragon
This is the GOT prequels that actually did get picked up and thank god. The estimated budget for House of Dragon costs approximately $15M/episode so HBO is counting on it to be a hit. This prequel focuses on the violent reign of House Targaryen when they were seated in the Iron Throne. Not much else has been released on the series, but takes place centuries before we see Daenerys blow the place.
Streaming: HBO/HBO Max
Starring: Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith
3. Pam & Tommy
Perhaps one of the most controversial videos released in the mid 2000s (prior to Kim’s sex tape), the series will follow the short time period of Pam & Tommy’s torrid love affair that comes crashing down when their sex tape gets released and goes viral.
Streaming: Hulu
Starring: Lily James, Sebastian Stan, Nick Offerman, Seth Rogen
4. Obi-Won Kenobi
Say it with me now, Anakin Skywalker! That’s right, the love of my teenage adolescent life, Hayden Christensen is returning as my beloved Anakin Skywalker, this time donning the mask and famous light saber as Darth Vader. The series is said to take place sometime between the birth of Luke and Leia to the fall of the republic. Cannot wait.
Streaming: Disney+
Starring: Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen
5. The Dropout
Get ready for a lot of content to come out about disgraced Silicon Valley tech and entrepreneur, Elizabeth Holmes. If you are unfamiliar with the name, Holmes founded the controversial and, oh by the way frauded, system called Theranos. The technology was supposed to take blood samples from human beings in their homes and be able to list out every single potentially impactful illness that could befall you in your lifetime. Billions of dollars were invested into this technology while Elizabeth Holmes not only misled shareholders on the accuracy of the product, she also lied about its trial runs. The series is supposed to cover the rise and fall of the young entrepreneur and how she landed into legal trouble. Look out, another movie starring Jennifer Lawrence is also supposed to cover this as well.
Streaming: Hulu
Starring: Amanda Seyfried, Laurie Metcalf, William Macy
6. Time Traveler’s Wife
While there has already been a movie adapted about the early 2000’s best-seller, this time they will be revisiting the world in a new series. The story follows Henry, a man who can, but without warning, time travel. The series will star Theo James (where have you been?!) as Henry, and Rose Leslie as his wife. The HBO Max Series is promised to be more faithful to the book and now that they have a series, they will most likely have the run-way to achieve this.
Streaming: HBO/HBO Max
Starring: Theo James, Rose Leslie
7. Conversations with Friends
The series is based on Sally Rooney’s novel of the same name. Rooney was responsible for writing “Normal People” which was a huge success in 2020. This series focuses on the lives of University Students who get entangled with a couple’s married lives. From what I have heard, it’s a less promising storyline, but I am still excited to see the adaption.
Streaming: Hulu
Starring: Taylor Swift’s boyfriend (Joe Alwyn), Sasha Lane and Alison Oliver
8. Lord of the Rings Series (Title TBD)
Again, not a lot has been released about this epic and ambitious project other than it exists in the LOTR Universe. The series is being developed by Amazon Prime Studios and is promised to be due out in 2022 sometime. I am putting this towards the bottom of the list because I have my doubts.
Streaming: Amazon Prime Video
Starring: TBD
9. How I Met Your Father
While I did not absolutely love the original series “How I Met Your Mother” like some fans, I did really enjoy it and I will watch it if it’s on. In this spin-off, the roles are reversed with Hilary Duff playing the Ted Mosby character and Kim Cattrall playing the older version. The series premise is the same, a mother is telling her children how she met their father and is told through flashbacks. Honestly, doesn’t look like the best acting, but should be entertaining
Streaming: Hulu
Starring: Hilary Duff, Francia Raisa, Kim Cattrall
10. Inventing Anna
Another Shonda Rhimes production is hitting Netflix this year and this time it’s based on a true-story. The series is supposed to follow the true life of Anna Delvey (Julia Garner), a con-artist from Russia who pretended to be a German heiress to blend in with the people of New York’s elite. While she is de-frauding the unsuspecting people of New York, a journalist begins looking into her life for a story. I’m invested!
Streaming: Netflix
Starring: Julia Garner, Anna Chlumsky
Other series, second-seasons returning that I am pumped for:
Euphoria (January), Bridgerton (March), Shadow & Bone (TBD)
ALSO, please, please Hulu, get it together so that we can see "A Court of Thorns and Roses" adaptation this year. Please and thank you!!
MOVIES:
1. Killers of the Flower Moon
Another one that I have been talking about for a while. This one has faced the unfortunate delays of shooting during the COVID pandemic but it finally seems to be back on track! The movie is being directed by Martin Scorsese and is based on the best-selling book by the same name. t's the story of the Osage Reign of Terror and the FBI investigation into the ring of criminals who systematically murdered Osages for their oil wealth in the 1920s
Release Date: TBD
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro
2. Don’t Worry Darling
The trailer that stopped time. I’m totally kidding, but it did give my heart palpitations. Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut focuses on a dissatisfied housewife uncovers a shocking reality, while her loving husband conceals a deadly secret. Come for Harry Styles, Stay for Florence Pugh.
Release Date: September 23, 2022
Starring: Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine
3. Where the Crawdad’s Sing
Produced by Hello Sunshine Studios and Reese Witherspoon this adaptation comes from Reese’s book-club best-seller. The story centers on Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones) who lives in the bayou without any real connection to the outside world. The movie and book encompass the ups and down of her life and her will not just to survive, but to live.
Release Date: TBD
Starring: Daisy Edgar-Jones
4. Thor: Love & Thunder
Taika Waititi is back in the directors’ chairs, "The Guardians of the Galaxy" gang are making cameos and Christian Bale is a super-hero, I mean, need I say more? Thor Love and Thunder will be the fourth installment in the Thor Series and is promised to follow the same story-telling that we saw in “Ragnarok.” More please.
Release Date: July 8, 2022
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Russell Crowe, Chris Pratt
5. My Policeman
Another Harry Style feature, “My Policeman” is due out this year as well! The film centers around Tom and Marion, reflecting on their lives when they first met in Brighton in the 1950s. When Patrick stays with them, Tom begins to reflect on the shift that happened in his life 40 years before.
Release Date: TBD
Starring: Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, Rupert Everette
6. Nope
Jordan Peele is back with 2022 Summer movie “Nope.” The movie plot has been kept under wraps but it will fit within the horror genre that he has created.
Release Date: July 22, 2022
Starring: Keke Palmer, Steven Yuen, Daniel Kalyuua
7. Elvis
The autobiographical story of Elvis Presley is due out this year and will be directed by Baz Luhrman, responsible for “Moulin Rogue.” Austin Butler stars as the famed 1950s crooner and will most likely follow the formula that other musical auto-biographies have followed.
Release Date: TBD
Starring: Austin Butler, Tom Hanks,
8. Bullet Train
A group of five assassins all board a train with the same mission. This cast is stacked and even though I know little about the plot.
Release Date: TBD
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brad Pitt, Logan Lerman, Joey King
9. The Lost City
This looks like your stereotypical popcorn blockbuster and that is exactly why I am all here for it. There are very few trailers that just immediately speak to me and this was one of them. Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) is a reclusive romance author who prefers to write about adventures versus experiencing them herself. But when an evil billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) kidnaps her and forces her to find the supposed lost treasure that she writes about in her books, it’s up to her brainless cover model (Channing Tatum) to save her before it’s too late. It literally has everything I want in a movie, oh, including a Brad Pitt cameo. Say no more, take my money
Release Date: March 2022
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe, Brad Pitt
10. The Batman
I mean, I know we have probably seen it all before, but I am very intrigued in this new adaptation. Switching Gotham City from Chicago to London, it sounds like the new Batman by Matt reeves will focus less on the origin of Bruce Wayne and more on his crime-fighting frenemy, Cat Woman (Zoe Kravitz).
Release Date: March 4, 2022
Starring: Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Collin Farell, Paul Dano, Andy Serkis
Honorable Mentions:
The Northman
Bros
Top Gun
Ticket to Paradise
I Wanna Dance with Somebody
Till
She Said
And that's the sitch!
