DC Fandom debuts upcoming fIlm footage as they attempt to compete with Marvel in the superhero space

DC Fandom hit the internet this week with the first Virtual Fandom Operation. The goal of DC Fandom was to preview the new content that was going to be coming out of DC Comics in the next few years. During the broadcast, viewers got a taste of the following projects: Matt Reeve’s upcoming The Batman launch, James Gunn’s Suicide Squad, final trailer for Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman 1984 and much more anticipated content that will be hitting screens in the near future.

DC Comics has largely been battling Marvel in terms of superhero content and based on its releases in the past few years, it has pretty much always come second. DC doesn’t have clear scripts, many of their characters are aliens that don’t fit the current superhero culture that Marvel has worked to create and the comic book characters are not as well known. Perhaps the most successful DC franchise in the past few years was Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy and one of the reasons that that Series operated so successfully was that it was portrayed outside the comic book tropes, it played more as a drama.

However, DC has many superheroes in its arsenal and we need to be prepared to see them hit the big screens moving forward as Hollywood invests in more superhero stories its almost guaranteed revenue.

Not sure what to take away from all the launches? I’m breaking it down all right here for you!

1. The Batman (2021)

Perhaps the biggest announcement to come out of the Fandom this weekend was the first look and teaser trailer of Matt Reeve’s The Batman with Robert Pattinson. The reprisal of the Caped Crusader came in 2019 and fans were hyped with each casting announcement that came from Reeve’s. The series will star the following: Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as Cat Woman, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Paul Dano as The Riddler, and Andy Serkis as Alfred, Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler.

In the trailer, we see the darker, grittier depiction of Bruce Wayne as he battles evil in Gotham City. The plot has been largely kept under wraps so we are still unsure if we are seeing some type of origin story as Wayne becomes The Batman, but is largely assumed that we pick up while he is already in stride. Production was shut down earlier this year as COVID caused disruptions when filming but there are already plans to get back to work this Fall. The Batman is due October 2021 and I am psyched to see it. Perhaps we will see Reeve’s The Batman depiction save the failing DC Comics film series.

2. Suicide Squad 2 (2021)

Five years after is debut in 2016, Suicide Squad is re-teaming once again, this time under the direction of Director James Gunn, responsible for the success of Marvel’s: Guardians of the Galaxy Series. DC Fandom debuted new behind the scenes content of the band of misfits that are formed together in a desperate attempt from the government to unite an entourage of villains to defeat a greater evil.

Suicide Squad premiered in 2016 to mixed reviews from critics, but outstanding performances from Margot Robbie as the controversial character, Harley Quinn. Suicide Squad 2 re-teams Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnaman, but many of the faces from the first movie will be missing and will be adding appearances from Idris Elba and John Cena. Yes, you heard that correctly. Plot is unknown but the sequel is due August 2021.

3. Justice League: Snyder Cut 4-Part Series

Justice League is back and this time it’s under the direction of Zach Snyder, the original director of the 2017 movie. Justice League premiered in 2017 and while the movie started under the direction of Snyder, half way through filming, he had to leave the project to deal with personal, family issues. In the wake of his departure, the film turned towards well-known Marvel Director, Joss Whedon to save the franchise. As the movie came and went in theaters, Snyder’s vocal disagreement with the direction of the film was widespread and he vowed that he would re-work the film and release it under his own vision.

In a statement from Warner Brother’s in early 2020, Justice League: Snyder Cut would be released, using only Snyder’s shots from his time on set. During DC Fandom this weekend, more light was shed on the project. Instead of being released as a movie, it is going straight to HBO Max and will debut in a 4-Part Series on the streaming site. The Justice League tells the story of 6 of the most powerful DC superheroes (Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Cyborg) teaming up to defeat evil. Of course, this depiction still has Batfleck (Ben Affleck) reprising his controversial role of Batman.

4. Black Adam (2021)

The newest addition to the DC Comic Universe is Black Adam which will be starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the titular role. Black Adam is an anti-hero who has powers similar to Superman, but uses them in a way to serve his own form of justice. Black Adam is the archenemy with Shazam and his team (we saw this movie in 2019 with Zachary Levi). Production is underway and is set to premier in December 2021. Noah Centineo is also attached to the project and is set to play the Atom Smasher…yeah, honestly will have to see it before I believe it.

5. Wonder Woman 1984 – October 2020

Wonder Woman 1984 was originally slated for a Summer 2020 release but was one of the many movies pushed back to accommodate the largest audience possible when it premieres. Wonder Woman 1984 re-teams Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot this time in the 1980s, where Diana Prince is forced to face the Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig. The final trailer to premier at DC Fandom sheds more light on the plot and Wonder Woman’s feline foe. It was a very shocking announcement in 2019 when Kristin Wiig became attached to the film, as she usually sticks to Comedy, but excited to see her role play out.

Wonder Woman was released in 2018 to critical acclaim and shattered box office records, immediately prompting conversations about a sequel. Excited to see if it lives up to the hype.

Wonder Woman 1984 Final Trailer

There was so much content that was released over the weekend, but these were the most exciting. Even if you aren’t as interested in DC Comics over Marvel, there will be a lot of their films in the discourse over the next few years as they attempt to compete with the Marvel Titan. Stay tuned!

And that’s the sitch!
