Happy 1-Year Anniversary to Me (The Sitch)!

I can’t believe that I have been writing pointless, pop culture articles for you guys for an entire year! Time really does fly and even if you don’t check in every time, it really does mean that world to me when you do, so thanks!

For The Sitch’s 1-Year Anniversary, I am going to be breaking down my new favorites in categories like television, books, movies, podcasts and music! To make sure you stay engaged, don’t worry, these are all new, I haven’t talked about them on the blog before…mostly. Unless you are friends with me and then you know that I have talked about them/they relentlessly.

TELEVISION

It's been a long six-months since the world shut down and in those six-months, I am sure most people have turned to television. We have nothing better to do in quarantine than fire up the TV and binge-watch more series. With Winter on the way, here are some of the series that are coming to our screens soon!

Emily in Paris (Netflix)

From the Creator of "Sex and the City" and "Younger" comes a new quirky rom-com made for television. The series follows an American, Emily (Lily Collins), as she is relocated to Paris for her marketing company to provide American insight into the company's operations. Set against the back-drop of the most romantic city in the world, we can expect to see adventure and romance tied up into one perfect, rom-com package. After watching the trailer, I am definitely getting “The Bold Type” vibes which will, hopefully, tide me over until a new season is released

Release Date: October 2nd

A Teacher (Hulu)

It’s a twisty, controversial story. Boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl…girl is boy’s teacher. Yikes. The series due out on Hulu focuses on the shifting toxic balance between a young teacher (Kate Mara), having an affair with her student (Nick Robinson). The limited series showcases how the illegal relationship becomes exposed, leaving both parties open to punishment and public scrutiny.

Release Date: November 10th

The Queen’s Gambit (Netflix)

Due out in October, the Series is based on the book of the same name. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy who plays the lead in the series, a young orphan whose world is ripped wide open as she begins playing Chess. Climbing the ranks, she reaches the US Open Championship but as her skills strengthen, she finds herself spiraling in the midst of the professional circuit and spotlight, caving towards the temptations and pressures to relieve her. Addicted to the feeling of success to avoid her past demons, Beth becomes obsessed with the competition, fueling her addiction to perfection.

Release Date: October 23rd

MOVIES

With the delay of virtually all movies that were slated to be released in November/December in theaters, there are still some gems on the horizon that I am hoping we see released before the end of the year. Here are a few of my most anticipated :

Pieces of a Woman (Netflix) – Kornél Mundruczó

After premiering at Venice to rave reviews, the film has been snatched up by Netflix and is looking at a Fall release on the streaming site. The film “Pieces of a Woman”, directed by Kornél Mundruczó in his first English language film, centers around a young couple, grappling with the sudden and devastating loss of their newborn baby. Vanessa Kirby who plays Martha and Shia LaBeouf as her husband, Sean, begin on an emotional journey after the loss of their baby.

Release Date: This Fall

On The Rocks (Apple TV+) – Sofia Coppola

The movie, due out on the streaming site October 23rd, covers the re-discovery of a lost father-daughter relationship when they reunite in New York City when the daughter fears her relationship with her husband is doomed. Starring Rashida Jones and Bill Murray, most of the film centers around the two of them, gallivanting around New York City in an attempt to find evidence that Jones’ husband is cheating on her. Early reviews suggest a fun, light-hearted film. Excited to see this one.

Release Date: October 23rd

Sound of Metal (Prime Video) – Darius Marder

In a newly released trailer, we see a struggling two-man band where the drummer is suffering from staggering and rapidly evolving hearing loss which causes him to leave his tour and seek treatment. The first clips from the trailer look very moving. The film will be released this year on Amazon Prime Video.

Release Date: November 20th

Supernova (Theatrical Release) - Harry Macqueen

Starring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci, the couple embarks on a road trip to visit their families and to take a trip down memory lane together. In the first glimpse at the trailer, we understand that Oliver (Tucci) is slowly losing his memory and his husband, Sam (Firth) has planned one final road trip to see if they can jog the lost memories. Will be bawling in the theater by the time this one ends.

Release Date: TBD

The Father - Florian Zeller

Based on the play, "The Father" explores the relationship between a father-daughter as the father ages, and begins experiencing dementia. As the father's (Anthony Hopkins) memory begins to deteriorate rapidly, his daughter (Olivia Colman) struggles to look after him. Assigning a caretaker to watch over him in his flat, he begins to doubt what is real and what is fiction.

Release Date: December 20th

I read this book in a day - could not put down!

MUSIC

If you are obsessed with new music like me, you are tuning in every Friday to check out Spotify’s Release Radar, catered to your musical tastes, or New Music Friday, a playlist full of newly released songs from the previous week. And as we move into the fall and winter months, with the end of quarantine nowhere left in site, we are going to need music more than ever. While I mostly listen to pop and singer-songwriter genres, there are a few new artists that I love and want to make sure you guys know about, so here are my suggestions!

If you like James Bay….Listen to Nick Wilson

I came across a few of his songs on the Pop Chillout Spotify Playlist and have been listening to his songs on repeat. Like most of my favorite artists, he is British and definitely occupies the singer/songwriter lane. While he hasn’t quite blown up yet, he has popped up on some high traffic Spotify playlists so look out.

Recommended Tracks: Enough to Know You, All The Same, Everybody But Me

If you like The 1975….Listen to LANY

Just before their second studio album drops, make sure you check out LANY. The band hailing from, you guessed it, LA and NY plays with electronic pop and synthesizers sounds to create most of their tracks, but they really do have great vocals. Their first album, “Malibu Nights” came out in 2018 and mostly covers break-up tracks. The lead singer, Paul, writes most of the band’s music and his first album essentially documents his 2017 break-up with British Pop Star Dua Lipa. Although their first album consists of mostly break-up songs, the upbeat music behind them doesn’t bring you down. Their second album “Mama’s Boy” is due out October 9th.

Recommended Tracks: Thru These Tears, Thick n Thin, You!

If you like Dermot Kennedy….List to Sam Fender

Sam Fender dropped his debut album a year ago with “Hypersonic Missiles.” Since his debut, the English singer-songwriter has been supported by Elton John and has already won a Brit Award for Best New Artist, joining the ranks of performers like Adele, Ellie Goulding and others. His sound is mostly soft and soulful and often times accompanied by a saxophonist.

Recommended Tracks: Will We Talk, The Borders, Dead Boys

PODCASTS

Running on empty with not enough stimulation? Already flew through your tv series and movies on streaming? Check out some of my favorite podcasts!

The Rewatchables

My favorite podcast is “The Rewatchables” by The Ringer Network. I would definitely recommend checking out if you are at all interested in movies, like me. The Podcast is mostly run by Bill Simmons and other members of the Network and covers some of the top movies released in the past few years. The coverage ranges from Oscar favorites to cult classics. In the podcast, they cover the following categories such as: what aged the best? Who “stole” the movie? And more!

Recommended Episodes: “Social Network,” “Easy A,” “Remember the Titans”

Ringer Dish: Tea Time

This once-a-week podcast covers all the dish from the pop culture scene. Need to check in on the latest celebrity drama? Look here. The Podcast is hosted by three millennial women in their mid-twenties so the celebrities that they mention, we actually care about. Also, since quarantine started, they have started up a new feature on the podcast called “Cringe-Mode,” which re-visits some of the “cringe-iest” obsessions of the last decade. Example being “Twilight.” 10/10 Recommend.

So that’s it, those are my most up to date recommendations. Check them out and let me know your thoughts!

And if you have made it this far, thanks for everyone for reading, subscribing and checking in with me. I have always loved writing and feel lucky to get to share my thoughts about all things pop culture with you!

Your support means the world.

Annnnnnnnd that’s the sitch.
