Hello Summer! Netflix Delivers its Promise for “New Movie Every Week” With Impressive Summer Slate

Remember back in January 2021, when Netflix announced they would be debuting a new movie every week on its streaming platform? It’s ok, if you don’t. January seems like an entire year ago versus a handful of months. So here is your reminder, there is a LOT of new content on the way. While Netflix has delivered on its promise, there really hasn’t been any great movies out, or at least, great reviewed movies.

Netflix Summer Movie Preview:

Really the one shining star of the bunch seems to have been “To All The Boys I Loved Before: Always and Forever Lara Jean” (talk about a mouthful). While there have been a few star-studded performances with “Thunder Force” with Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer, “Outside the Wire” with Anthony Mackie and “I Care A lot” with Rosamund Pike, not a lot of their original releases have made waves like “To All The Boys I…” you get it…

However, do not fret! Netflix Film announces this morning their impressive list of Summer Blockbuster’s coming soon and included clips and stills of the films. Here are just a few of the impressive movies coming soon to your (home) screens.

1. He’s All That

Release Date: August 27, 2021

Sigh…not just is this another 1990s re-make, the re-make will be starring TikTok celebrity Addison Rae. While the premise is *exactly* like the 90s version with Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook, instead of the girl being transformed from dweeb to queen, the roles have been reversed. In the 2021 version coming to Netflix, Addison Rae is in charge of loser classmate the ultimate popularity make-over. Annoying….yet…I will still watch.

Yeah, he looks SUPER geeky.

2. The Woman In the Window

Release Date: May 14, 2021

I have *personally* been waiting for this adaptation for over two years. The film was shot back in 2019 and was originally supposed to be released in theaters in May 2020. Cue Pandemic, it was pushed back an entire year and, thanks to Netflix, will be coming May 2021. I have my doubts, although the subject matter from the novel was binge-worthy, the film spent over 6 months in Post-Production; a terrible sign. Post-Production is the editing phase and if it took that long to edit, the original content might not be the best. Still! Excited to watch and based on the cast (Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Anthony Mackie and Gary Oldman, to name a few), I’m sure the viewing statistic on this will be huge!

3. Army of the Dead

Release Date: May 21, 2021

Zack Snyder is back! After a pretty impressive reception of his 4-hour, $200+ Million re-shoot of DC’s “Justice League,” he is back to making original content. “Army of the Dead” is based on the zombie apocalypse, where a crew of rebels team up to venture outside the quarantine zone to pull off a heist set against the backdrop of Las Vegas.

Think “Suicide Squad” + zombies. Interested? Ok, whatever.

4. Monster

Release Date: May 7, 2021

Perhaps the most interesting subject matter of the films released, “Monster” follows a seventeen-year-old honor student (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) in New York who gets pulled under into a life of crime. Instead of graduating high school, he faces a future behind bars. Sparking important and necessary conversation around the Black Lives Matter movement, this movie holds the most awards-contender language in its discourse. The film will also star Jennifer Hudson and Jeffrey Wright.

5. Awake

Release Date: June 9, 2021

Little has been released about this dystopian thriller other than the movie takes place within a world where humans have lost their ability to sleep. As scientists race against the clock to find a cure for the unexplained insomnia, a group bans together, led by Jill (Gina Rodriguez), only to realize that the mother’s daughter, might be the answer to the cure.

6. Fatherhood

Release Date: June 18, 2021

Kevin Hart is back in a sympathetic dramedy (think 2019’s “The Upside”) only this time, he is a father operating parenthood alone. Little details have been released, but looks heartwarming and up-lifting.

7. The Ice Road

Release Date: June 25, 2021

Liam Neeson is back and he’s kicking ass, this time as an ice-truck drive who must lead a rescue mission across the frozen ocean to save trapped ice miners. Dealing with the harsh landscape and unforgiving elements of the frozen tundra, the real enemy, is the one they never saw coming. DUN, DUN, DUN!

8. Resort to Love

Release Date: July 29

Where are my rom-com lovers at? Netflix has been completely hit or miss when it comes to their romantic comedies and here’s to hoping this one is another slam dunk (looking at you, “Someone Great”.) In “Resort to Love” Christina Milian is Erica, a rising pop star who finds herself at her ex-fiancé’s wedding after a failed attempt at a gig. But the surprising encounter forces her to re-consider her feeling for her ex-Jason.

9. Sweet Girl

Release Date: August 20, 2021

Jason Mamoa is a devasted husband on a search and rescue mission for his daughter who has gone missing. After recently losing his wife, Mamoa will do anything to ensure his daughter is safe.

10. The Kissing Booth 3

Release Date: August 11, 2021

Ok, not technically super excited for this, but I will most definitely be watching. It’s the third and final movie of “The Kissing Booth” franchise. That’s about all I have to say on that.

You can't hear it, but Jacob Elordi is screaming on the insde...

So, which ones are you most looking forward to? I am planning to re-cap most of them here so, stay tuned!

And that's the stich!
