Hollywood's Rising Stars Up-Coming Projects

While we may have lots of options to watch and stream in 2020, the future of movies and television in 2021 is unclear. Although some countries are starting to re-open with very strict shooting guidelines, in the US, the future of film production is still under massive scrutiny to ensure sets are abiding by social distancing measures to protect the crew and stars which means projects that have started, might not be finished as early as we hoped. However, instead of dwelling on the fact that we may not get as many large budget blockbusters in 2021, for the time being, we can look at all the up-coming projects of some of Hollywood’s (and my favorite) rising stars.

Here are the projects coming down the pipeline for…

Glen Powell

1. Top Gun: Maverick (December 23, 2020)

Originally slated to be released in July for a Summer Blockbuster this year, the long-awaited sequel has been pushed back to a December release. In the extremely anticipated sequel of Top Gun (1986) we go back to Top Gun where we now see Maverick as a guide, training the new generation of fighter pilots. Glen Powell is a recruit alongside Goose’ son, played by Miles Teller

Zendaya

1. Malcom & Marie (TBD, 2020)

Malcom & Marie made headlines last week when it had been announced that is filming completion. Malcom and Marie officially become the first movie to be written, filmed and edited during COVID. Written by Sam Levinson (Creator of Euphoria), the movie will be starring Zendaya and John David-Washington in the leading roles. While not a lot has been released about the film’s plot, it is rumored to be a a post-quarantine “Marriage Story” type movie.

Tom Holland

1. Cherry (2020)

If you have read my blog before, you will know that I am eagerly awaiting the release of Cherry, starring Tom Holland. Holland, largely known for his role as Spiderman in the Avengers Series is an actor that is known for his affable personality and likeability. We only have a few more months left of that Holland. Cherry marks one of the first serious roles he will be undertaking and this step forward will be sure to get him recognized by the Awards Circuit. Cherry is based on the novel of the same name and actually is an autobiographical account of Nico Walker, a war veteran suffering from PTSD as he attempts to re-acclimate into life in Cleveland Ohio. Crippled from his PTSD from his time in Iraq, Nico turns to opioids to cure him from his disorder but as he runs out of money to pay for the drugs, he begins robbing banks to pay off his loans. Directed by the Russo Brothers, responsible for the Avenger’s final movies, Cherry is expected to make a splash at the box office and is expected to propel Holland into super-stardom comparing him to the likes of young Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon. The movie has wrapped filming, just waiting on post-production editing. Let’s hope we get it this fall!

Lucas Hedges

1. Let Them All Talk (TBD, 2020)

The new comedy movie, starring Meryl Streep, Gemma Chan and Lucas Hedges, just to name a few is completed and slated to be released in 2020. Few details have been released on the movie, but the plot is supposedly centered around a famous author as she embarks on a cruise with her nephew and friends. The movie is set to premier on HBO Max.

Timothée Chalamet

1. Find Me (TBD)

While no official filming timelines have been announced, Find Me is the anticipated sequel to Luca Guadagnino’s break-out movie Call Me By Your Name (2017). Luca has already finished the script and depending on shooting guidelines, the film could start shooting as early as end of 2020. Find Me will follow Elio and Oliver many years after their romance ended. Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet are both set to return to their roles.

Florence Pugh

1. Don’t Worry Darling (TBD)

Announced during quarantine, Don’t Worry Darling is going to be directed by Olivia Wilde. The plot has been described as a domestic psychological thriller about an un-happy 1950’s housewife. Not a ton of details have been released, but it will be starring Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, Shia La Beouf and Dakota Johnson. Excited for this one!

Ana de Armas

Deep Water (November 13, 2020)

The movie that sparked the Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas couple photos that helped us get through quarantine. The movie is directed by Adrian Lyne, who is best known for his romantic thrillers such as Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal – we can expect much of the same themes in Deep Water. The movie stars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, a couple that is working through relationship issues. In order for them to work through these marital issues, Affleck allows his wife (de Armas) to have affairs in order to avoid an inevitable divorce. However, when one of de Armas’ lovers is murdered, her husband (Affleck) becomes the prime subject. Sign me up.

Saoirse Ronan

Ammonite (2020)

I am sensing very similar themes like Portrait of a Woman on Fire. Starring Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet, Ammonite takes place in the 1840s England, when an infamous British Scientist (Winslet) is sent to the sea to recover from a traumatic event and illness, falls in love with the young woman (Ronan) inhabiting the island. The film has already been completed and was set to premier at a variety of film festivals this year. Winslet and Ronan’s performances have already sparked Awards Chatter. Although the film was supposed to be released in 2020, it has been rumored to be pushed back to Spring 2021. This release date will still make it Oscar eligible due to The Academy’s new criteria.

Dylan O’Brien

Infinite (2021)

Anyone else missing Dylan O’Brien on their screens? O’Brien is a lesser known, up and coming actor, most notably recognized from the Maze Runner Series a few years back. After suffering from some serious injuries on the set of the movie, once the Saga concluded, he didn’t appear in much. However, he is back and has a few bigger projects in queue, one of them being, Infinity. I exclusively judge the success of a movie for up and coming actors that I like by their upcoming movie co-stars. If I recognize big faces that will be appearing alongside them in their upcoming projects, I am invested. Dylan O’Brien’s upcoming movie Infinite stars Mark Wahlberg and Chiwetel Ejiofor and focuses on a man who discovers that the unpleasant visions that he is suffering from are actually memories from a previous life. The movie is in Post-Production, but due to COVID, the movie probably won’t be released until 2021.

Lily James

Rebecca (2020)

Lily James has a lot of projects on her plate, but the one I am most excited for is Rebecca (2020). Starring Lily James and Armie Hammer in the lead roles, Rebecca is the story of a young newlywed couple that arrives at the husband’s (Hammer) family estate off the coast of England. Upon arrival, the wife (James) finds herself in the shadow of her husband’s first wife, Rebecca, whose memory lives on within the family and the house, long after her death. Described as a romantic thriller, I can’t wait to see Lily James and Armie Hammer hit the big-screen together.

Eliza Scanlen

The Devil All The Time (September, 2020)

Eliza Scanlen is best known for her role as the quiet March Sister, Beth, in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (2019). However, she has been making a name for herself in the past few years and her upcoming project list proves that she will be around for a while. The Devil All The Time stars Eliza Scanlen, Tom Holland, Bill Skarsgard, Sebastian Stan, Robert Pattison, just to name a few and centers around the people in a small town in Southern Ohio in the 1960s that suffer from extreme psychological distress after returning from World War II. This movie has also been completed and is slated for September 2020 release – still pending.

And these are the up-coming actors and projects that I am most excited for. The sad part here is that all the above movies were slated for 2020 Releases. While most of these are still caught up in the Post-Production phase of editing, its still a bit unclear when these movies will be released. Fingers crossed for 2020!

Which one are you most excited for?

And that's the sitch.
