I May Be Four Years Late, But "The Bold Type" Is Seriously Worth The Watch.

I am the first to admit that I am wrong.

Actually, that is not true, I am the last, usually. But in this instance, I will freely admit it. I was wrong about The Bold Type. When it debuted in 2016, I wrote off The Bold Type as another wannabe feel-good, soapy drama that had no depth. It was part of the first wave of Freeform Content when it was transformed from ABC Family and I was ready to pass off The Bold Type as another wasted, saturated quasi-feminist show compared to the likes of Pretty Little Liars or other over-worked drama series at the time.

But you guys, I was wrong. If you are like me then you have no doubt been inundated with Ads promoting the Freeform Series that in fact is, really about female empowerment. And if you haven’t watched a show yet, trust me, it’s worth the investment.

Based on the lives of actual writers on staff at the Magazine: Cosmopolitan, The Bold Type explores the inner-workings of a fashion magazine from the eyes of three twenty-something best-friends navigating their personal and professional lives against the backdrop of Manhattan. The show was created by Universal and based on the true stories of Joanna Cole, who served as Editor in Chief for Cosmo starting in 2012. Joanna Cole currently sits on as the Executive Producer Role for the hit-series.

There's fashion, relationships and a whole lot of drama. I mean, what else could you want out of a Television Series? The Series stars Kat (Aisha Dee), Jane (Katie Stevens) and Sutton (Meghann Fahy) who work in social media, writing and fashion departments at Scarlet Magazine (obviously modeled after Cosmo). Throughout the series we see the inner-workings of an up-scale magazine that help viewers to uncover serious and pressing issues through in-depth reporting including references to the Me Too Movement, gender power-dynamics in the workplace, important Women’s Health Topics that are rarely covered through multi-media outlets and of course at the heart of the show, female friendships.

Plus, it has very relatable one-liners:

"You have to stop picking Wine by the Label, this is the third time we have been screwed by that."
"Yeah, I'm gonna drink it anyway."

Jane, Kat and Sutton deciding whether ice cream or Whiskey can solve heartbreak. Spoiler Alert: it's both.

Life in your mid-twenties is hard. You are dealing with hurdles in your career and relationship problems, half of the problems that I encounter in my life or in the life of the friends are touched upon in an important way that I have rarely seen captured in a television series. Not only does it tackle important topics in women’s lives, it also gives viewers an inside look into the transformative art of journalism and its transition from print into digital forms that we all digest throughout the course of our day.

While The Bold Type tackles popular issues within our culture, it barely scratches the surface when it comes to a deep dive, but it does give viewers a closer look into the societal norms that are dismissed so often in our everyday conversation. The Bold Type allows these issues to be viewed and hope that we have the conversations afterward.

Plus, you guys, they have amazing outfits.

So if you are looking for great content to watch after work with a bag of popcorn and a glass of wine. Sit back and relax because The Bold Type gives you at least forty-five minutes of an un-interrupted escape. The Bold Type is currently on Season 4, but you have time to catch up on Hulu! Trust me, I binged within four weeks. You can do it!

And that’s the sitch!
