Outer Banks on Netflix is a stereotypical basic teen drama that follows all the tropes of modern soaps….so naturally most people binged within a week of its release. We have seen the storylines time and time again, but for some reason that doesn’t stop viewers from tuning in and watching the re-works and re-boots of teen drama soap operas. Outer Banks is no different. Outer Banks hits Netflix a few weeks ago and quickly ranked in Netflix’s Top 10 Programs within a week of its release.
While Netflix doesn’t exactly release the algorithm behind its newly debuted Top 10 Netflix recommendations, it is believed to be centered around popularity and it is thought to be updated on a daily basis. These movies/series/specials are noted at the top of Netflix with special banners, encouraging views to select their already selected options.
Regardless of how viewers found the content, they did and it stuck. Within a week it reached the #1 Position and exploded. It was successful, just as other teen soaps have been successful and it’s no surprise, it follows the same cookie cutter formula.
Outer Banks follows the main character, John B, struggling with the disappearance of his father (daddy issues) When searching for his father, he stumbles upon a hidden treasure hunt that he uncovers with his friends (outcasts in society). During their treasure hunt, John B requires the aid of Sarah Cameron (privileged daughter of the founding family) and as they search for the hidden treasure they start to fall in love (forbidden teen love). The Series highlights the social class systems at play in the Outer Banks as the Pogues (working class) constantly at war with the Kooks (high class). But in a vapid, shallow way.
The series stars the following (from left to right):
- Pope - the scholarship kid who must earn his father's approval
- John B - leader of the Pogues, on a mission to find his dad and get the elusive Sarah Cameron
- JJ - best friend to John B, loose cannon, bad family life. Think Tim Riggins.
- Kiara - former Kook who be-friends the Pogues. Sworn enemies with Sarah Cameron and devoted to her friends.
Kind of get the picture? We have seen this in “The O.C”, “One Tree Hill”, “Riverdale”, honestly the lists continue, but it proves that the formula is still alive and well. Outer Banks has already been renewed for a second season within weeks of its debut. The Cast is all active on social media and has been climbing in followers since the series aired – something that has become successful with longevity of shows it seems. These casts involvement with fans have proven successful with Netflix in the past, most notably “Stranger Things.”
Netflix has once again captured the attention of another audience, holding it captive as people are desperate for content during quarantine. However, it seems regardless of when the content was released, it would have been destined for success.
