Nolan’s Latest Time-Loop Thriller, ‘Tenet’, makes headlines with its “Coming to Theaters” Promise

If you remember, back in March, theaters started closing down due to COVID and movie studios started pushing back the release dates of its anticipated titles. One title that remained excluded from that long list of re-scheduled releases was the highly-anticipated release of Christopher Nolan’s, ‘Tenet’. The latest trailer debuted last night with a bold promise. As the trailer ended, three words flashed across the screen right before the credits:

“COMING. TO. THEATERS.”

The topic of not only if movie theaters will open, but when, has been circulating in the news more recently with Universal’s statements promoting dual-release schedules with VOD (video on demand) and theatrical releases. Due to their comments, Regal and AMC Theaters have banned Universal films from their docket when they re-open. Missing from that list, Warner-Brothers and their summer blockbuster release of “Tenet”. This statement at the end of the trailer might just be a message to the other studios out there. We care about movie theaters and you should too.

Christopher Nolan has spent years building a reputable brand within his releases and is well-known for his success with the Batman “Dark Knight” Franchise (2006-2012), space-thrillers such as “Interstellar” (2014) and war epics such as “Dunkirk” (2017). Perhaps Nolan’s greatest claim to fame are his mind-bending, time-traveling twisters such as “Inception” (2010) and it seems that his latest-release from Warner-Brothers, “Tenet” will follow in a similar suit.

The first “Tenet” trailer debuted early this year and left viewers with a huge question mark. It obviously dealt with time in some capacity as most of the scenes shown in the brief clips were of boats moving backwards, people running up the sides of buildings and reverse bullet shots. However, last night’s trailer release helped us fill in more of the gaps…kind of? Starring John David Washington, who seems to be some type of secret agent, known as a “tenet” that specializes in the art of “inversion”, or the ability to move backwards through time. Their mission, preventing World War III.

“Tenet” seems to be starring more of Nolan’s favorite actors that have been known to work with him in different projects such as Michael Caine (Dark Knight, Prestige, Inception) and Kenneth Branagh (Dunkirk) as well as new faces such as Robert Pattinson (Twilight, Lighthouse) and John David Washington (BlacKkKlansmen).

Nolan’s “Tenet” is still slated for a July 17th release date and might just be the first Summer Blockbuster to hit theaters. It’s release in theaters is sure to be interpreted as a statement to other studios…to put it mildly….get their shit together. Theaters need studios and for the time being, studios still need theaters for wide-releases. Everyone will surely be watching to see when theaters re-open and how the box office numbers will compare to Nolan’s other Summer Blockbuster releases during Opening Weekend: Inception ($62.5M), Dark Knight Rises ($160) and Dunkirk ($50.5).

Will Tenet stack up? What are your box office weekend guesses?

And that’s the sitch.
