Rooney's 'Conversation with Friends' Adaptation set with Hulu after success of 'Normal People'

If you haven’t seen BBC Three / Hulu’s latest series Normal People, it’s about time you checked it out because there is more content like it on the way. Based on the rapid success and critical acclaim of the novel turned Limited Series, Hulu is snagging up the rights to another novel written by the same author, Sally Rooney. Hulu has already set its sights on Rooney’s debut novel, Conversations with Friends just a few months after the original adaptation Normal People aired.

Sally Rooney might be known as a millennial writer, but there is nothing time-defining about her stories, they are timeless. She writes about people in their twenties which might come across smoother with a-like audience, but that doesn’t mean its restricted in its boundaries. Sally Rooney is an Irish-Writer who found success with the publication of her first novel, Conversations with Friends in 2017 and if you watched the series Normal People, thinking the content there was scandalous, get ready for Conversations with Friends. Rooney’s debut novel focuses on the lives of two twenty-year old friends living together in Dublin who become intertwined within the complicated dynamics of a married couple’s relationship, throwing all partners in the affair into an upheaval. Drawing on similar ties of Normal People, the book is set in Ireland and ties very closely to the similar themes of friendship and relationships and the unclear boundaries that coincide between the two.

Daisy Edgar-Jones (Marianne) and Paul Mescal (Connell) in Normal People

Although Hulu does not release its ratings, it has been pretty clear that the Series, Normal People, exceeded expectations. In fact, the two leads in the series, relatively new-comers in the space, Daisy Edgar-Jones (Marianne) and Paul Mescal (Connell) are already lining up their next projects and their performances have sparked awards chatter and buzz. Normal People centers around Connell and Marianne and how their hidden relationship in high school is re-constructed and transformed time and time again throughout their lives together and apart. The Series does an amazing job with the cinematography and character’s angles as most of the communication between Connell and Marianne is through close up shots rather than through words and communication.

Set to return to the directors’ chairs are Lenny Abrahamson (Room) and Hettie Macdonlad after their massive success with their first adaptations. Abrahamson himself is from Dublin, Ireland and had noted that he fell in love with the unique intimacy between the two characters in Normal People who communicate more with their thoughts and feelings than with actual words.

No word yet on when Production will begin on Conversation with Friends, however, due to COVID restrictions easing up in Europe, we might see the adaptation hit screens in 2021. It will again be released in partnership with the BBC Three and Hulu divisions and will most likely pick two new-comers to reprise the leads.

Stay tuned as more develops.

And that’s the sitch.
